Rant: Why the Yahoos on Public Transit just need to stop

I have had this on my mind for a long time. Normally I don’t rant on my blog because I do that with my friends, and not on a social forum. I just have to say something.

I’m from a small town. I get that.

I now live in a city and things are different. I also get that, however, sometimes I want to move so far away from the city to a small remote village on a random island somewhere to escape all of the people who have forgotten about manners and how to behave like humans.

I take public transit every day. Each and every day, I get pushed, shoved or treated like wherever I am going couldn’t possibly be as important as the guy or gal with the giant backpack (that they refuse to take off on the subway or bus to allow for anyone to pass or line up in a normal manner). I’m really tired of it.

I am so sick of how rude people are to each other; how people won’t give up their seat for the pregnant lady who got on the bus. They avoid eye contact until someone like me, half way to the back of the bus, offers up their seat when we see what is happening up front. They yell phone conversations across buses. They spit. They leave garbage everywhere. A bag gets a seat while people stand or have to politely ask the person to move their stuff while they pretend to not hear.

It’s a really fun game.

I’m not sure when people stopped caring about others. When pushing and shoving and treating other patrons that taking public transit became  acceptable. It’s no different for how some people also treat the drivers.

Today, I witnessed a driver get yelled at by some yahoo lady who was pounding on the bus door of a very full bus. To be clear she wasn’t even at the actual bus stop, which to most would be step one of the ‘taking the bus’ process. The driver had already asked people to move back, but they weren’t listening, and there was no room for this lady on his bus behind the white line, which is also not just a fluffy made up rule. It’s for safety…. He tried his best and she wouldn’t listen. Pounding on the door, she then yelled that he would be fired and a bunch of other inane babble. Le sigh.

Getting off of the bus is a whole other debacle in itself. People use their bags as a shield as they plough through what they treat as cornfields, to get off the bus ahead of everyone else. Where are you going that you need to do this in such a rush? If you’re late that sucks, but that doesn’t mean you have to mow down a lady with a cane to get to the subway platform for your next leg of your travel. Politely say excuse me. Maybe don’t shove. Maybe even apologize when you whack me in the head with your bag as you shove me. Baby steps. I’m not going to expect miracles, but man. This is really really sad.

I’m just wondering when all of this became okay?

I know I could get a car, and take other transportation. I also know there are good people who take transit every day and don’t push people. A woman held people back the other day just to let me out of my seat. Thank you to her.

So thank you to those people who make me smile through the commute – the ones who make me forget that I just got pushed, that make me laugh when they too roll their eyes when other people do the above-mentioned things.

I hope there are more people out there like you.

Can all of you other yahoos take lessons from these people? Please?! Maybe give is a good hard go. You’d probably be surprised at how smoothly your commute goes, at how quickly (or quicker) you get to where you’re going when you all act like decent people, treating other humans, as you’d like to be treated too. Have some respect for yourself and others. It’s the human thing to do.



(Author’s Note: I love the word yahoo.  That’s actually a fact.  I think it should be brought back.  That and when people say a lie and then yell ‘NOTTTT!’ {eg.  We should really do that *pause* NOTTTT!!!} really loudly.)



Run for the Love of Pete 5K : The Why

Screen Shot 2016-05-18 at 9.24.43 AMAt first, I wanted to do something in the memory of my father, Pete. I wanted to raise money and awareness for heart health so that people around me got to live longer and learn about the things that they needed to do to accomplish this. I love running, so why not pair the two?

Over the course of wanting to launch this run (I’ve been thinking about this for about a year and a half), I had anxiety about hitting send on a mass email, hitting create on an FB post and talking to people about it in general. I’d hold back. I realized that all I needed to do was take the first step.

In all my research around running races, and organizing them, I scoured the pages of Runners World Magazine and any online resource that I could. If I was having this much trouble taking the first step to creating a race to ‘change lives’ then how many other people were having the same struggle? I mean this from all standpoints in life. Were others struggling to run? Were others so afraid of what other people thought so much that they were just sitting and waiting for that perfect moment to do what they really want to do?  Were other people so paralyzed with fear and self-doubt that they just sat on really great ideas for a really long time instead of just getting out there and doing them?

I was (and still am a little spooked) about taking the first step. What if one person comes to the race? What if no one shows up? What if it’s raining? What if people look at September 11th as a negative date? What if I don’t raise awareness or money and fall flat on my face? There will always be ‘what ifs’.

I took the first step yesterday.

I almost puked in the car.

Some people will understand, some people won’t. Some people will laugh at your goals and mine, others will suScreen Shot 2016-05-18 at 9.16.28 AMpport them with banners (think signs made out of glitter and uncooked macaroni, that’s what I see ;)), and do whatever they can to help.

I set-up the Facebook invite, and to some that will seem rather trivial (or an archaic way of doing things hah), but it has taken me months to hit that ‘create’ button. My buddy Doug took me for a ride in the car. He made me listen to a podcast that really changed the way I look at this hurdle. I have to spend more time looking at why I want to do this, not at how or what. The rest I can figure out along the way. All I have to remember in every step of this process, no matter how good or bad this goes, I took the first step – the first step of many to come.

I will learn a lot throughout this whole thing, things won’t be perfect and I will refine and change things as I go. I hope that you join me, as we take many first steps together, never forgetting the why along the way!


REVIEW: LANEIGE Water Bank Gel Cream

IMG_7136As part of an Influenster campaign, I recently got sent free product to review for LANEIGE.  I was sent the Water Bank Gel Cream to test out.   (You’ll have to excuse my less than stellar product photography skills – A for effort for sure ;))

What I enjoy in order of awesomeness:

  • Cooling effect on your face – Once you apply the gel cream to your face you can feel the tingling sensation and cooling that the product boasts right away. It’s refreshing and this is great both in the morning or when going to bed.  Freshhhhhhh!
  • Fragrance – In a lot of instances you get a product that works well but doesn’t smell the part.  It can be a huge turn-off for me, and I am happy to report this cream smells great. Slightly floral, yet fresh.  I love this smell!
  • Texture – This is for normal to combination skin.  I have the latter.  This cream is thin enough for my skin and it doesn’t feel like it’s bogging it down.  Because of it’s lighter texture, it doesn’t clog my pores and I still feel like my skin is getting the moisture that it needs.

What could be improved:

  • Shiny skin post-application – This could be just be me and my skin, but I found that my skin IMG_7147was shinier than normal.  This can be the case with a new product, given that I have only been using it for two weeks.  Sometimes it takes time for your skin to get accustomed to a new product in your beauty regime, and may not even be something that can be improved.
  • Whole line exposure – I would have personally liked to test the full regimen of products (they also offer a cleaner, serum and mask).  I do understand sending a whole line of the products probably wasn’t in the marketing budget of the company when launching these products, but it would be useful to test the whole line.  I’d ideally like to see how all steps of the products work on my skin and how they work  together.

6 End of Summer Favourites

This summer I’ve found a lot of favourites, that will continue to be favs into the cooling down months! (We all shudder when the F-word is mentioned, so I won’t say Fall ;))

1- Fablectics –  I suppose I can’t really say it is one thing – it is many things. I have so many awesome capri tights that continuously get me compliments at the gym with awesome new patterns; I have cute workout shirts, and a killer tote bag envied by many.  Kate Hudson – you done right!  My fav piece is the bag to the left, with its beautiful graffiti-like design, that I use for soccer and quick travel weekends.  Superb!Screen Shot 2015-09-08 at 7.39.02 PM

2- Life Brand Exfoliating Face Wipes – I run, train with my trainer three times a week, do yoga and play soccer.
That means I’m often a sweaty mess.  These wipes were reco’d to me by my fellow super fitness fanatic friend Hilary (you can read about her and her amazing fitness journey here). These wipes swipe that gross-sweaty-salty-after-sport grit off of your face and exfoliate your skin.  They make you feel like you’ve just washed your face, even if your reality looks more like sitting on the side of a soccer field post-game taking off your soccer cleats!

3. amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo – I got a tester of this lovely product and used it for the first time when I was in a pinch between work and an event.  When you’re on the run, and you’ve worked out, or even just had a long day – this dry shampoo smells great, and really dries up and freshens thScreen Shot 2015-09-10 at 8.47.16 PMose less than fresh (read: greasy) spots.  That sounds like an infomercial.  You’re welcome.

5. The Daily Crave Veggie Chips –  I was at a gourmet grocery store (why, I’m not sure) and I found these gems. Tasty like a real chip, but wayyyyy less salty, gluten free, vegan free… haha kidding.  They are vegan though for real! They are also dairy free, with no artificial flavours or colouring, non GMO, and no hydrogenated fats.  (Check out their website for more info!)

6. PC Blue Menu Sparkling Water  –  I’m trying to give up pop.  I love Coke Zero, but hate the idea of Screen Shot 2015-09-10 at 9.51.34 PMaspartame.  That being said I was looking for an alternative that still gave me the fizz aspect with some flavour.  With no additional sugars, this one won.  I love all the flavours they offer, but mandarin is my top pick of the bunch.  They offer lemon, lime, and pomegranate blueberry as well!

Northern Summer

I think sometimes we all need a vacation.  From the hustle and bustle of our lives, from our own over-analyzing minds – an escapism where we are sometimes only able to find solace in the familiar – our childhood home.

Lately I’ve had some time to reflect on my life, what I do, who I am, and numerous other soul-searching endeavors that could easily leave ones head spinning.  Something that we should all undoubtedly do at certain points to evaluate our lives.

I remember a friend telling me once that once you hit your thirties, you will stop reading books like the Alchemist and just face reality that life isn’t all inspiration and aspiration.  I hope that I never stop dreaming, and envisioning bigger and better goals for myself and those that I choose to surround myself with. Thirty or not, I refuse to believe this.

I think that facing yourself, what you’re good at, and what you’re not good at (let’s call these the ‘works in progress’) are some of the hardest things that you can do.  It’s easy to sit there and say I’m really good at ‘x’ and ignore that perhaps you have done things to yourself and other people that are the result of those things that you’re not so good at.  Perhaps insecurity is at the forefront of some of these things, like it is with me.  Heck, I didn’t even really want to start this blog for years because I didn’t want to look silly, or have people thinking ‘what gives her the right to write about these things? What does she know?”

I struggle with the idea that ‘it doesn’t really matter what other people think’, because in some ways it does.  There are people out there who read and see what you do, they judge your work, your credentials based on a small amount of interaction and evaluate who you are, what you have to offer, whether you have influence or ‘klout’.

The key is to have enough confidence to know who you are, the values that you represent, the person that you are and the work that you do. (A friend’s father told him that recently and he was kind enough to share this wisdom with me.)  Keep your head held high, and believe in you.


The people who matter the most will know you, stick around even when you’re a bit of a sh*t-head, hug you when you’re down, and become the biggest cheerleaders that you didn’t even realize or appreciate that you had.  They’ll encourage you to blog more, talk to people more, and shine that light that is you regardless of how dim you may feel it is at the moment.

Part of it is just recharging – hanging out with people who make you laugh, who sign you up for dragon boat races when you don’t even know how, those who remind you that writing is for the soul and is one of the hardest things we do sometimes – “it is ultimately spilling your guts out in text form.”


Running like a NorON

Whenever I have the chance to come home in the Fall, I try to take it.  There is just something about the Fall that really makes me smile.  I love the temperature, crunch and smell of the leaves under my feet while breathing in the cool air.

I haven’t been running as much as I’d like due to this pesky Achilles, but being away from my normal gym routine, and gym buddy, with limited gym access here up in Northern Ontario, I decided to hit the pavement and do one of my favourite runs.  It’s actually one of my favourite runs to do in the winter, so I figured that Fall would also do 😉

I always get nervous being in a small town running because people slow down to see if they know who you are, and I always feel like I should run faster, to make sure that they know that I am in fact an athlete. (I don’t know why?! Maybe because I’m slightly cray ahah)

I did in fact run faster than my regular speed and I felt the fresh Fall air rushing through my lungs, and I could hear my footsteps echoing through the street.  (I was also a little out of breath, and could also hear that echoing through the streets too, but let’s downplay that part for the sake of the story haha)

I got to the centre of my little town of Cobalt (“if you don’t live there it’s your fault…” There is a song about the town that has that line in it in case you were wondering) and decided to run the stairs that are there.  I tried to take two at a time, and figured Rocky would have been proud. (Not so proud that I wasn’t wearing a hoodie… fail on my part.  Maybe next time.) When I got to the top, I must admit I was a little winded, but continued on my merry little way.

When I got to my street I ran by the houses and up the little incline toward home, and ended my run in front of my driveway, like I have done for more than 15 years now.  It always makes me smile, no matter how hard the run was/is.  It’s that familiar feeling, where times fades away and you are taken back to the very first time when you felt that feeling and sense of accomplishment.  This feeling never changes, no matter how many times you come running in.

I’m proud of being from Northern Ontario, and I miss it quite a bit.  In University I met a guy named Matty D (you may know him) from Canada Sudbury.  When he found out where I was from he said “Oh, wow a fellow NorON.”  I thought he called me a moron to be honest and was kind of taken aback.  So, as I do ever so politely, I responded with “Like, WHAT?!?” He said “NorON you know.. like a Northern Ontarionian without it being weird.” (He may not have said it exactly like that, but again for the sake of the story, work with me here.)  The term stuck with me, and for some reason still makes me smile.

I enjoyed my run tonight.  Every single moment about it.  And so I will continue this week to go on my runs here in Cobalt – running in a way that only a NorON would know…



Review: Femme Fitale Kickboxing Classes

boxingThe lovely ladies at Femme Fitale asked me to come in and check out a month’s worth of classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and give them an honest review.  I was delighted to do this and felt honoured that they asked me to join their lovely ladies in some kick-butt kickboxing classes.

I have taken boxing classes before that mainly focused on sparring, overall conditioning and punching combos, but I have never had kickboxing integrated in there.  It was nice to be able to add that extra element to the experience.

Being familiar with boxing I was a little worried that the combos would be too simplistic or that the classes might not be as challenging as I needed them to be to whip my butt back into shape after taking it easy for a month-ish 😉  However, I was pleasantly surprised that we jumped right into things day one.  I was impressed with the different combos of kicking and sparring drills that we were asked to do, and I could tell from the reactions around me that the other girls felt the same way.

Week 1:  I admit that I was a little intimidated going into the first class because I didn’t know anyone, but as soon as I arrived I felt welcomed by the other fellow Femme ladies.

I was lucky enough to have Sammie Kennedy, the creator and CEO of Femme Fitale, as my instructor.  When you first meet Sammie you realize she is a super sweetheart, but you soon learn that not far below the surface is a drill sergeant that you learn to also love!  She is nice, but she is also not afraid to kick your butt if you are slacking – ultimately she wants you to get the most out of your workouts, and her classes never fall short of that.

The class began with a cardio circuit warm-up, followed by some simple combos, which allowed everyone to have some time to gain confidence in their boxing stances, and positioning.    The second class of week one, Sammie knew that we were more comfortable with the combos, so she increased the pace of the class and she warned us that there was no going back!  We most definitely believed her and by Friday I could still feel that burn in my muscles that I knew had come from Wednesdays class.

We were given a DVD when we started the class (along with some awesome hand-wraps, and weekly email challenges) with extra at home workouts on it that we were encouraged to do on the weekends, in between classes.  This was a great bonus and is something that you can most definitely use to your benefit.

Week 2:  Upping the ante once again with jump rope, suicide running drills, and burpees in between tricky combos sets that included both kicking and sparring drills, I was pleasantly surprised at how well I was doing and how much farther I was able to push myself after just a week and a half of these classes.

Week 3:   Running drills and suicides are always a fan favourite *groan*… (okay, I’m learning to love them, almost as much as burpees;)) Burn-out rounds were added to this week, which I was quite impressed with.  Burn-out round consists of a number of different combos that you do for a minute each.  Sammie gives you the 4-5 different combos at the beginning and you don’t stop in between the rounds at all.  You spend each minute really isolating different muscles until you pretty much feel like jello (in a good way!)

Week 4:  I was only able to make Monday of this week and unfortunately I have to miss Wednesday.  The great thing about this is that Femme has a great policy that allows me to take a make-up class to replace missed classes.

During tonight’s class my partner Sarah commented that she hadn’t seen me sweat as much as I did tonight and she was proud of me for working so hard.  Being with a partner for four-weeks you get to know their strengths and weaknesses.  You get to help them perfect their skills and encourage them when they want to quit.  In a sense you get to work out, and also coach at the same time, which is a great experience in itself.  At the end of the day it is awesome watching your partner get stronger and improve, and knowing that you too are doing the same.

I won’t tell you every single thing that we did in the classes, because I think you really truly should find out for yourself.  I’ve merely given you a snapshot.

Overall, I enjoyed these classes.  Although I seemingly went through the 4 weeks of my experiences in these classes, I can guarantee that your experience with the classes will be different.  None of the classes are ever the same, and this is a great thing.

When you come to class, you are able to catch up with the ladies that you just met, but feel like you’ve known for a really long time.  You each have a few things in common.  You’re all there to workout and become stronger, but you also hear the encouragement of each other’s partners as the times get longer and the drills get harder, and you kind of just smile because you know that your turn is next.  You all have beads of sweat rolling down your brow, and your partners yelling words of encouragement and slapping the pads together, as you scramble to catch your breath.  You don’t know what the next combo is going to be, or if you’re going to love it or hate it, but that is part of the fun.  You are challenged beyond thresholds that you didn’t know you’d ever cross.  This workout is a great one.  In the end, you get out of it, what you put in.

And so, I signed myself up for February classes.  Bring it on!
