Social Media and 100 Days of Burpees

The other day I was on #fitchat and I met @300lbsandrunnin .  He was talking about his #100DaysofBurpees Challenge, so of course I needed to butt-in and ask what this was about.  300 lbs and Running's 100 Day Burpee (You can click here if you’d like to know more or participate.  Come join in on the burpee fun!!  If you do not know what a burpee is, you can click here.  My cousin asked what a burpee is and then suggested that it was something that someone did after drinking a Slurpee too quickly.  har har. )

Admittedly I’m picking up this challenge a little late in the game.  I started on day 20, and plan on continuing through to day 100, given my poor heel can take it.

The awesomeness of social media and ‘chats’ that are run on Twitter are evident once again and have proven to be quite beneficial to me.  Never would I ever commit to doing burpees for 100 days by myself! (Not going to lie about that one hah.)

Before, I never understood why people swore by chats on social media.  I have learned over time why.  You are chatting with people from all over the world who are interested in the same things as you.  You sometimes even get a chance to brag about your own accomplishments too, and of course sign-on to support others and participate in challenges. 🙂  (I’m not saying do it because you’ll get an imaginary internet pat on the back, but I’m saying do it because you will gain friends you didn’t even know were out there.)

I have had the opportunity of ‘meeting’ quite a few of you on social media and look forward to the day we can put the face to face with our friendships.  When I try to explain this to some of my friends, I get the “These people are not your REAL friends, Rebecca.”  On the contrary I believe quite the opposite.  I’ve ‘seen’ imaginary friends before, my brother used to have one growing up named Cheermuck.  (He’s going to kill me for writing that… and no I have no idea where the name came from, and when he drew a picture of him once he looked like a tree with a face on it.)  Anyways, returning to the subject at hand, I have also met people who I have talked to on social media before, and we’ve had some of the most solid friendships.  When you read and participate in someone’s social media, you do get to know them quite well before you actually meet them face-to-face.  You often already know a lot of things about them that you both have in common, the bonds have already been set.

Social media gives people an outlet, and allows them to say what they truly feel about their passions and what is happening in their lives.  Never would I ever have predicted that I would have such a great support network of like-minded people who are constantly encouraging me to get out and do my running, my planks, my burpees.  etc.  It’s like having 1000+ personal trainers and life coaches at your fingertips, or as some may call them, friends 🙂

Happy training,

2013: NYE List

2013We all look at the New Year as an opportunity to start fresh, a blank slate so to speak, an “I can do anything because it’s January 1st” kind of moment!  I like that it is a new beginning, but I also want to remind myself that this blank slate shouldn’t mean that I forget all of which I have experienced and accomplished in the past year. (The gym will be more crowded this January and I will grumble and mumble things under my breath breaking my first New Year’s Resolution to be nicer…because someone is on my favourite machine at the gym, but I will try to remind myself that at some point that was me. ;))

As promised, here is my NYE List!!!  I hope you all had a wonderful New Year’s Eve.  I am so excited to see what in store in 2013!!

TOP 10 OUTSTANDING MOMENTS OF 2012…

  1. Running the lululemon Sea Wheeze half marathon in Vancouver.  It was my first half marathon, and my first run of the scenic sea wall in Vancouver.  I would recommend this race to anyone and everyone!!! So great!
  2. Being the maid of honour in my childhood best friend Chantal’s wedding.  What an honour and privilege to be a part of her very special day.
  3. Having a Christmas dinner with some of my old roommates.  We have the ability to laugh and make fun of each other/ourselves, and any situation for hours.  No matter how long we are apart we always come together and it feels like we’ve never been apart.
  4. Presenting for the first time in front of my global brand owners, the VP and two directors, and having the VP tell me that I “did a great job in there.” My confidence in public speaking is on the rise 🙂
  5. Having Hilary come home with me this summer to vacation/staycation at my childhood home.  We had so much fun, and I am always so grateful for my Hilary-time 🙂
  6. Spending time with my cousin Melissa this summer and during the Christmas holidays.  She is one of my favourite people in the whole world and she is absolutely hilarious and amazing!
  7. Getting to see beautiful Jamaica and cross it off my goal list!
  8. Sales and marketing conference in Collingwood.  Pre-gaming in the hotel before cocktails/dinner.
  9. Spending time with my mom and bro this Christmas.  As much as they tease me about being a princess, they still make me dinner and take care of me 🙂
  10. Winter running in Cobalt at night.  Best winter run of the season.  Most definitely challenging with all those hills 🙂 The frozen eyelashes are obviously also a favourite of mine.
TOP 5 DISAPPOINTMENTS IN 2012
  1. Not winning the lottery.  My friend Kevin and I have been practicing week after week.  We’re getting really good at playing the lottery, so it’s only fair if we win sometime soon! hah
  2. Gaining a lot of the weight back that I wanted to keep off and letting a lot of my fitness goals slip to the back burner of my life.
  3. Not beating my time in the Sporting Life 10k and realizing that I have a lot more work to do to get back into the shape I want to.
  4. Not becoming Prime Minister of Canada.  That’s always disappointing, not just in 2012 😉
  5. Having a major falling out with one of my best friends 😦
5 Goals for 2013
  1. To run a sub 58 minute 10k.
  2. To practice what I preach and become the fitness guru I’d love to be. 🙂
  3. Travel more and see the world.
  4. Keep up with the blogging and improve my writing as much as I can.
  5. Hit my goal weight.

3 Best New People of the Year-

  1. Jo  (@clickflickca) –  This social media guru never ceases to amaze me.  He’s everywhere all the time, and he makes an amazing partner in crime at fashion shows!
  2. Rae Gibson (@raeraegibson) –  One of my favs, great mentor, running buddy and office giggle sharer.
  3. Jentzen- (@JentzenMShea) –  Sometimes you just meet someone who you can sit down and chat with over London Fogs for hours 🙂
  4. Mitch- (@MitchParkerRE) – VIP to me, important member of the trifecta, and has a corny sense of humour like yours truly.  (I’m sure you’ve noticed that this is 4 Best new people and not 3, but I rarely follow the rules 😉 Rules are made to be broken in some cases hah.)

Happy New Year everyone!! May you set some great goals for yourself, and stick with them 🙂

NYE List for 2012

calvin

I’m going to have to edit my list a little bit, as there are a few things that I don’t want going public  (read: names of boys/embarrassing details haah)…. but every year a wonderful group of friends and I, sit down (whether it’s together or in a coffee shop on our own) and reflect on the year that has passed.  We list the top 10 outstanding moments of that year,  whether we accomplished the 5 goals that we had set out for ourselves that year, 5 disappointments of the year (we can’t always be positive!) and the 5 new goals for the upcoming year.  Last year we also added a “3 best people of the year” section.  If we aren’t together we share via email.  This happened last year.

Below you will see my email to the group from January 2012.  I have edited it a bit to preserve some self-respect (I hope you don’t mind :))

Hello Folks, Here is my list, I know I wasn’t there at midnight.. I hope you guys don’t mind recapping a bit for moi. I love all of you guys so mucho!  I read over my stuff from last year below and thought that some goals were rather funny, now that I read back.

TOP 10 OUTSTANDING MOMENTS OF 2011…
  1. Getting a promotion!!! As I’m sure you can reference below, that was a great disappointment for 2010.  It took me a whole ‘nother year, and I got said promotion Dec 2010, but I did not give up.
  2. Being asked by my two lovely friends to MC their wedding, and doing it without looking silly, barfing, screwing up etc.  Basically launching my career in stand-up is what I’m saying.
  3. Travelling to Sweden for work and actually getting my butt somewhere other than North America.  although not on my own dime (yeehawwww!) I got to live like a queen and the experience is one that I surely will not forget for a long time.
  4. Getting published/interviewed for an article in Canadian Running magazine.  Far from famous, but still super excited to be part of a publication 🙂
  5. Attending a course on Public Speaking, doing my speeches and gaining the skills that I need to do the best stuff ever.
  6. Meeting a boy that I really like, and realizing that sometimes it’s really not you the timing may just not be right- doesn’t mean the end of the world.  I’m still learning, this is good 🙂
  7. Becoming a Big sister to a Little Brother through the Big/Little Program.  Highlight-  “Rebecca, because I’m 16 I’m going to be done the program soon (18), but that’s okay.. because even when this program is over I’m going to remember how much confidence that you have, and I’m going to be like you.”
  8. Dropping out of the half marathon a day before-  to some this might not seem like a highlight- but for me this was a highlight and pivotal moment in my life where I said.. “no, you’re not prepared… there is nothing wrong with that, but you don’t have to do this if you’re not ready.”  I never used to say no.  Now I do 🙂
  9. Going home for Christmas and not getting into any fights at home.  Although most of the majority of my time was spend elsewhere, i’d like to report that maybe just maybe we’ve (all my fam) has grown enough that we get along now? I’m probs jinxing next Christmas.
  10. Making my 90 grandmother laugh at Christmas and feel special.  “You have not changed a bit since I’ve met you, Rebecca.  You are still crazy!”  ❤
TOP 5 DISAPPOINTMENTS IN 2011
  1. Not losing the final 40 lbs that I would like to.
  2. Finding two roommates who are less than my favourite people…. le sigh 😉 (randoms off craigslist)
  3. Finding someone who likes me, but sometimes it’s just not enough… = le single Bexx 😉  (Oh well, gives me more time to figure out me.. until I’m 40 ;))
  4. Getting dumped in a subway station.  Subway dump has become his new name.
  5. My bestie Leanne quitting Corby.  I miss seeing her everyday.5 GOALS for 2011
I only completed one goal for last year…. I travelled again to Sweden, Calgary, Vancouver, NYC.  I did not surf, get a bf, finish my half marathon or exercise/go running with Brenda so she can attain her Olympic gold medal in water polo. 5 Goals for 2012
  1. To go parasailing
  2. To meet someone who compliments me and my life, at the right time 🙂 (my psychic says I’ll meet two dudes I need to decide between and be super happy and awesome/excited about love by Oct… so don’t panic.. hahaah
  3. To travel more, and see more of the world
  4. To pay down debts.  Not all of it (unless I win the lottery,) but a nice chunk.
  5. Lose the last 40 lbs 🙂

3 Best New People of the Year-

  1. Amira De Vera–  She is a friend from Twitter.. haha we met at an event, but since then we have hung out and become super close.  She is a 5 foot (barely) tall bubble of energy.  Absolutely amazing.
  2. MM (timing dude from above… I’m not giving up on him just yet.. but if it’s meant to be.. it will… if not.. I will marry Freddy Prince Jr.  no big deal..)
  3. Sue McGrath-  a new friend from work.  I knew her before but we were not tight.  We go to boot camp together now, and she is one of the most genuine, awesome, honest, amazing person that anyone could meet.
xox b*tches,
Bexx”
I wanted to share this with you because I hope that you all do the same this NYE.  I don’t really look back at my list from the previous year until I sit down to do this again.  It’s interesting to see which goals you have accomplished, which you have blown out of the water (throwing those goals down and making them yell MERCY! because you so awesomely squashed ’em) and how sometimes you aren’t necessarily where you thought you’d be, but you’ve still come so far and accomplished so much.
I can’t wait to post the reflections from this past year and the new goals for 2013!!
2013 is going to be a great year, I can feel it!

The Guy With Two Thumbs

Today I helped my friend Chantal with her grade 1/2 class.  She was surprised that I was willing to get up to be ready for 6:20am to make it to school with her.  My alathumbsrm didn’t go off and I was almost late, but I made it.  We dropped her two kids off at daycare and were on the road sooner than later.

While social media continued to remind me today of the impending doom of the end of the world tomorrow, I was reminded of what it was like to be a child again 😉

Now a lot of my friends are teachers, some employed as such and some still looking for jobs, and I was privileged to be invited to be a guest in the classroom today to see what all this hype was about.  I work in the alcohol industry in marketing and often get teased about how easy my job is and all the perks of my job certainly do not go unnoticed.  Teachers sometimes hear the same thing, with summers off and having it easy just ‘watching a bunch of kids all day’, how hard could it be?  This is wholeheartedly an inaccurate description of both my job and a teacher’s job if i do say so myself.   Anyone who thinks that running a classroom, having to engage 15+ students at a time is an easy task has a skewed perception of reality… and I know this despite only being there for a day.

I got to step out of my regular marketing shoes, and experience what it is like to work with 18 wonderful 6 and 7 year olds today.  I understand what my teacher friends are talking about – how much they plan, how much they put up with, and how much they appreciate those ‘feel good’ feelings when a child finally appreciates something they’ve said, taught, or done for them.  I mean at the end of the day my experience is limited (and was in fact just one day… I realize this) but I have a new appreciation and respect for what teachers do having had the opportunity to be integrated right into the classroom myself.

I was helping the students make some ornaments for Christmas.  (I’m calling it Christmas, to heck with this ‘Holiday” bull…. hah)

Things that made my day today:

i) I got called Madame Rebecca for the day
ii) A little girl got so excited by some little presents she found today in her classroom stocking (pencil sharpener, pencil, candy cane etc.,) that she gushed that Christmas could be over because she was so genuinely excited about what she had already received.
iii) A little boy made me laugh really hard because he reminded me of me (from what my mom tells me mostly) at that age.  He yelled: “Who wants to come play? Come over here to the guy with two thumbs!” *points two thumbs at himself*
iv) Another little girl asked if I was coming back tomorrow and after Christmas.  When I said no, she replied – “Well I’m going to do everything in my power to see you again because you’re just so nice.”

I’m still smiling from my experience.

I know this isn’t my typical fitness post, but still relevant because moments like this are important too 🙂

Hang out with a child this holiday season.  They make you remember to not take yourself and life too seriously! *two thumbs up*

Jamaica Update to Come!

Hi Everyone,

Returning from a vacation is always taxing (haah I suppose not taking vacation is also taxing to some…) and I am so far behind in emails and tasks that I haven’t had a proper time to post or write about my vacation.  I promise I will get to that soon.

I also have an exciting post coming up in the NOT SO AMATEUR section of my blog featuring someone who I hold dear to my heart that is a great inspiration to me and those around her, Miss Hilary Jack.  I will try to post this by end of day!  I am going to be using the NOT SO AMATEUR section of my blog to talk about ‘every day normal’ people who have met their fitness, athletic and/or health goals and serve to inspire those around them in everything that they do and be recognized for doing so!

I will leave you with a dorky photo of me on the beach.  It was dark so it didn’t turn out as well as I had hoped. (Neither did the plank that I was doing in the picture either 😉 hahah.)

Bexx on the Beach!

Jamaica Mon!

I will be absent for a little bit while I am taking a well-deserved week-long vacation to Jamaica! *party pants are on, folks.*  I leave on Saturday, but in between now and then, I have a lot of packing, laundry and organizing to do.

Goals for the trip:

1- To try jerk chicken

2- To perfect my cannonball

3-To ride down a river in a tube, and climb up Dunn’s River Falls (maybe not in that order haha)

4-To run on the beach in the morning at least once (I always say I’m going to and then don’t.  I think once from never is a great goal! :)) *I’m bringing my running shorts, oh yeahhhhh*

5-To come back to Canada rejuvenated, refreshed and raring to go with so many more goals and aspirations!!!

Oh yeahhhhhh!!!

So I will be missing for a Motivation Monday and Wednesday Wisdom, but I’ll be back (hopefully with way more wisdom and motivation to share!!)

I will of course be posting about my trip upon my return, as it is on my master Goal List!! (As I cross goals off of my Goal List, I will dedicate at least a post to each :))

Take care everyone! Be safe and keep it up with all those amazing goals, lovely people!
